Finding the right doctor can be overwhelming for new moms. Here are some common questions our new mom's ask looking for a Pediatrician at Pentucket Medical Centers:
You should choose a pediatrician by your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, so that you have time to make a carefully considered decision before the baby arrives. Remember, some babies arrive early, and you want to be fully prepared.
You deserve a pediatrician you can trust, someone who will listen to you, and draw on your thorough knowledge of your child. Your pediatrician should welcome questions. He or she should seem to enjoy working with children, and not be rushing to get to the next appointment. If you have an older child, your child’s reaction and comfort level with a pediatrician should be an important factor in your choice.
Besides your assessment of an individual practitioner, you should take into account the overall atmosphere of the practice. Is it a warm, welcoming place, with cheerful waiting rooms and helpful staff? Of course, there are practical concerns as well: Is the doctor taking new patients? Does the practice accept your health insurance? Is the location and the parking convenient?
Your prospective pediatrician should be willing to meet with you or talk on the phone with you and answer your questions. You may want to cover the following topics (some of which can be answered by the office staff) and also any concerns you may have about caring for your new baby, if you are a first-time parent.
- What hospital is the pediatrician affiliated with? Will he or she see the baby in the hospital?
- How long does it take to get a well appointment? Is it usually possible to schedule a sick visit the same day? Does the practice have weekend hours?
- Who will answer your medical questions during the day? Who can you talk to at night, if something comes up after hours?
- Are there separate waiting rooms for well and sick children? How long do children usually wait to be called?
- How many doctors in are there in the practice? Will your child always see his or her own doctor?
- Does the pediatrician use some kind of developmental screening (usually an electronic survey parents fill out before well visits)?
- Does the pediatrician agree with you on issues like discipline, alternative medicine, or whatever other topics are important to you?
It is important that you and your child’s doctor have a good relationship, and can work as a team to safeguard your child. If for any reason you do not like your doctor’s style,
you should change to a pediatrician that you feel more comfortable with.
