In early April nearly 200 Pentucket employees across all office locations laced up sneakers, strapped on pedometers and began walking, as participants in a 12-week Walking Challenge. The program, an initiative of our Human Resources department, engaged 48 teams in a friendly competition to see which team could accumulate the most steps.
"We had a wonderful response from all of the sites," says Human Resource Director Sue Constantino. "We were officially counting steps, but we heard anecdotally that there were quite a few pounds shed as well."
Indeed, Dr. Goslyn Sylvan, a member of North Andover's "Team Flash" says he lost a couple of dozen pounds during the course of the Challenge. His group, which turned out to be the winners overall, racked up a total of 5,624,343 steps, a figure which, calculated in miles, is a bit over 2000 miles – the equivalent of walking to Denver.
Participants walked alone and in groups, wearing out sneakers, pedometers – one participant reported that her puppy had eaten her pedometer – on lunch hours as well as before and after work, on the streets of their neighborhoods and at the gym.
Congratulations to all who participated!
