• VIDEO: NECN Report on Pillcam ESO Pentucket Medical Associates offers an exciting new technology: Wireless Capsule Endoscopy. This is a vitamin-sized camera in a pill and is used to non-invasively evaluate the Esophagus (Esophageal Capsule) or the Small Bowel (Small Bowel Capsule). The patient simply swallows the pill and it takes pictures which are then downloaded to a computer for review by Dr. Stephen Wiener, a Board-Certified Gastroenterologist and specialist in this new area of medicine. ESOPHAGEAL CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY, EXCLUSIVELY AT PENTUCKET MEDICAL Pillcam ESO will be featured on the Today show on November 29th with a live ingestion by Katie Couric herself along with a discussion about the importance of Barrett's Esophagus and Cancer screening. SMALL BOWEL CAPSULE ENDOSCOPY OFFERS UNPARALLELED EASE FOR PATIENTS Dr. Stephen Wiener was the first Gastroenterologist in the Merrimack Valley to offer this procedure. A small vitamin-sized camera in a pill is swallowed and it takes 57,000 pictures of the small intestine. The pill passes normally. The pictures are downloaded to a computer to be reviewed. This test can be used to determine the source of gastrointestinal bleeding or look for evidence of Crohn’s Disease (an inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract). HAVERHILL: Pentucket Medical Associates (PMA) is converting its medical record system to an electronic model, a process that will provide for increased efficiency for patients, physicians and staff. “The benefits of using the advancements in technology are enormous,” says John Sarro, PMA’s Executive Director. “We have purchased the General Electric Medical System product, “Centricity,” which allows us to completely manage all aspects of the patient record electronically, including demographics and insurance information, medical history and medications, diagnoses and treatment plans.” “We are also able to electronically capture and display test results, allergies and medication lists,” Sarro continues. “This is especially useful in a large practice such as PMA. Now, information traditionally maintained by the primary care doctor is available to the specialist through the click of a computer mouse. Sharing of clinical information across medical disciplines is now instant and easy,” Sarro continues. “For the patient, this means that we can answer many questions faster. For example, if a patient calls the office, staff can discuss test and lab results or medications without having to wait for the paper medical record to be pulled and read.” Other benefits include the elimination of large amounts of paper records. “By law,” Sarro says, “medical records must be stored and preserved for years. In the past, we’ve rented special storage space for the paper records. From this point on, we will be able to maintain the files on computer disks instead.” Converting the practice to the new electronic system has been methodical. Training models have been set up at the office sites, and both staff and physicians have been required to attend training sessions. The conversion has been introduced by department by site. To date, most of the Haverhill and North Andover sites including Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Cardiology and Gastroenterology are fully operational. The electronic conversion will next move to Newburyport and Georgetown. The paper records are also available until the system is fully implemented and all staff is comfortable with the new system. “We are convinced that the electronic medical system will allow us to serve our patients even better,” says Sarro. “Our systems will be more efficient. This will allow our doctors to focus on patient care issues, rather than on the paperwork associated with medicine. Patient care is what our doctors are trained to do, and this is what they want to do.” Pentucket Medical Associates is a multi-specialty physician group with office locations in Georgetown, Haverhill, Newburyport and North Andover. PMA is a member of Partners Community HealthCare, known to most by their founding hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Daniel Powers believes that life’s experience contributes greatly to his perspective as a physician. Dr. Powers, who will be working from Pentucket Medical’s North Andover location beginning in December, has a rich background of experience from which to draw. An eight-year-veteran of the U.S. Navy, Dr. Powers was the first American physician deployed into Kosovo with the Peacekeeping Force, as Battalion Surgeon for the Second Marine Division. Since leaving the Navy, Dr. Powers has served as a hospitalist in a hospice, a primary care physician in group practice, and a clinical instructor at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Life’s stream of experiences have by no means slowed down for Dr. Powers. He is a recent first-time parent and a volunteer at area animal rescue leagues, where he combines his love of animals with a passion for photography to help homeless strays find new placements. “I have a special clinical interest in asthma treatment and prevention, sports medicine and women’s health issues,” Dr. Powers said. “I am also always interested in working with patients to achieve their highest possible level of health and well being.”
