Diabetes Care

Recognizing that diabetes is one of the most significant health challenges facing many residents of the Merrimack Valley, Pentucket Medical has assembled the region’s most highly qualified team of medical subspecialists in the management of this disease. Our commitment to taking on diabetes includes a significant investment in support staff and laboratory resources.

Early diagnosis is a tremendously important aspect of managing this dangerous disease. In America today, 20 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and another estimated 54 million are “pre-diabetic” or at severe risk of contracting the disease. One of every eight dollars spent on health care in the United States is a diabetes-related expense.

Pentucket Medical's multidisciplinary approach to diabetes management includes:

  • Primary Care Physician: directs your overall diabetes management program
  • Endocrinology: treatment of glandular and blood-related issues stemming from diabetes
  • Cardiology: management of cardiovascular issues that often accompany diabetes
  • Nephrology: treatment of kidney-related challenges stemming from diabetes for both Type I and Type II diabetes
  • Nutrition: dietary management and education providing the basis for the nutritional strategies which can often effectively the reduce the complications of diabetes

Early detection of diabetes is an essential step in reducing its impact. Some people are more susceptible to diabetes than others. Risk factors for diabetes include:

  • A parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Age greater than 45 years
  • Some ethnic groups (particularly African Americans, Native Americans, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic Americans)
  • Gestational diabetes or delivering a baby weighing more than 9 pounds
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood levels of triglycerides (a type of fat molecule)
  • High blood cholesterol level
  • Not getting enough exercise
